Just curious if anyone runs or specifically does sprinting for endurance
I want to focus more on other workouts and it seems when I reach a certain time it take a toll on my lower back which never use to
Since I do everything to extreme I tend not to want to change it
Want to keep good level of endurance but not spend as much time but still works for good endurance
Curious if anyone has a good specific routine that works

I run marathons, completed 4 and 2 more in the next 6 months scheduled. Do some version of fartleks. Great for endurance.

Time yourself running 1 mile as fast as you can. Then go online and find your time chart that corresponds to your age. That will give you a good idea how well your pace is.

I guess I will rephrase this
My stamina is great
The point is I do too much where my lower back starts to hurt
I am looking for a specific routine that keeps good endurance but doesnt last and hour and a half and doing multiple sets of 3-5 minute sprints

I have heard many people say you only need 30 minutes sprints with rests of up to 30 seconds and repeat 10 times or so and thats really good
But since what I have done has been great maybe I should just reduce time a bit where my lower back doesnt get like that

I love sprints for everything, it doesn't matter if you're losing or gaining weight, building muscle or toning, training for endurance or quick burst, sprints is it, Imo...

I don't have a particular workout, don't really train for endurance as much these days (thought about picking it back up, though), but it's sprint, hills, and the ultimate and fave, pad work, for me...

Easy sprint workout for me is to sprint the straightaways and walk the curves on a track. Do as many laps as you want, stop and rest for 2 minutes, repeat...

Guess I better get my lazy ass off the couch, now, thanks for the little motivation for the day...lol

Since it seems you may have done a bit of distance running and want to continue, maybe this book by an old Professor of mine might be of interest...

beach running without shoes...I've gone though a ton of different running shoes over the years... barefoot is the only way I don't get shin splints.

You need to let us know more about your current routine, height/weight, and age.

If you run sprints now, that is a good sign.

Generally speaking:

  • wear top tier running shoes, thick running socks, take out the insoles and buy cushioned ones at running shoe store or a Dick's
  • avoid running on cement or asphalt; padded dirt trails are the best, low cut grass is ok, tracks at schools are better than cement or asphalt but not optimal
  • do not switch routines quickly, phase into new ones very gradually, many people make extreme changes too quickly
  • stretch, start out walking, then jogging, then back to walking... if you are in shape to do some sprints, sure, do that at the end but IMO it is not the way to go (eg walk a half mile, jog two, walk one, jog three, then your sprints if you choose)
  • If you improve and are comfortable with it, then stretch and jog 5-6 miles a day 3x a week, 7-8 miles a day 3x a week, no sprints IMO, take one day off each week
  • speed is not the goal (if you are over 40, especially), the longer you are walking or running, the better, as opposed to sprints

Sorry did not see that you have had back pain, that is telling you to slow down especially the sprints... yes sprint intervals have a 30 second or so time between sprints, but it depends on how long your sprints are and how fast you are running them and how old you are and your body type and length of years of precious training in your life and a lot of things.
Again, IMO sprints are not a good idea if you are over 40, over 50 I would say hell no depending on the issues I cited.

34 Years old, headed to 35 in November.

I weigh around 265 right now, I enjoy running but at this weight kills my ankles.

Gonna start walking 15-30 Mins a Day, eat less get down to around 200 by 2023 and start running.

Runners talk about a HIGH they get.

Pretty much concur w above (I am age 62)

Running is in general somewhat violent on the body, especially knees and ankles

Brisk walking for distance and swimming for distance much more amenable

I have averaged approx 50 miles walking weekly for past 15 years and my height weight and vitals remain above-average

I'm 57, and I can run under 6 min mile. I stay away from running on cement or pavement....
